ASVAB Math Prep in Victorville: How to Raise Your AFQT Score

1 min read

Planning to join the military from Victorville or the High Desert? Your ASVAB score decides whether you qualify and which jobs you can choose. The good news: the math sections improve quickly with the right practice.

Which ASVAB scores matter most

Your AFQT score, the one that decides whether you can enlist, comes from four sections: Arithmetic Reasoning, Math Knowledge, Word Knowledge and Paragraph Comprehension. Two of the four are math, so math prep pays off twice.

Arithmetic Reasoning: word problems

These are everyday math word problems: percents, rates, ratios, averages and simple interest. Most mistakes come from reading too fast, not from hard math.

  • Underline what the question actually asks

  • Write the numbers down before solving

  • Estimate first so you can spot a wrong answer

  • Practice timed sets, not only untimed homework

Math Knowledge: algebra and geometry

This section tests rules you learned in school: solving equations, exponents, factoring, area, perimeter, angles and the Pythagorean theorem. If it has been a few years since high school, a short review brings it back fast.

A simple 4-week plan

  • Week 1: take a practice test and find your weak topics

  • Week 2: review fractions, percents and ratios

  • Week 3: review algebra and geometry rules

  • Week 4: take timed practice tests and study every mistake
