CSET Math Tutor in California: How to Pass Subtests I, II and III
Try this before you read anything else:
What is the smallest positive whole number that has exactly 6 factors?
Many candidates start testing 24, 30 or 32. The answer is 12. Its factors are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 12.
The fast way is prime factorization. If a number is p^a × q^b, it has (a + 1)(b + 1) factors. To get 6 factors you need (2 + 1)(1 + 1), so the smallest choice is 2² × 3 = 12. That one idea comes back again and again on the CSET.
Who this is for
You want a California teaching credential in mathematics. Or you are taking the Multiple Subjects exam and the math part worries you. Maybe you have not touched algebra in ten years. Maybe you missed passing by a few points last time.
Either way, you are in the right place. We help adults pass this test, one person at a time.
What is on the CSET Mathematics exam
The exam has three subtests:
Subtest I: Algebra and Number Theory
Subtest II: Geometry, and Probability and Statistics
Subtest III: Calculus and History of Mathematics
Each subtest has multiple-choice questions and written problems where you must show your reasoning. Scores are reported on a 100–300 scale, and 220 is passing. You can take the subtests separately. Always check the official CSET website for the latest test details.
Where candidates lose points (and how we fix it)
Rusty basics. Fractions, exponents, factoring. We rebuild these first, and fast.
Written responses. A right answer with unclear steps still loses points. We practice writing solutions the way scorers want to read them.
Number theory and proof. Primes, divisibility, remainders. We teach the patterns, not tricks to memorize.
Calculus after a long break. Limits, derivatives and integrals, one step at a time.
Timing. Practice sets under real time limits, so test day feels normal.
