AP Calculus Chain Rule: The Mistake That Costs Points (Victorville Tutor Explains)

3 min read

If your teen is taking AP Calculus in Victorville, Hesperia or Apple Valley, there is one rule that decides a lot of exam points: the chain rule. Students know it. They still lose points on it. Here is the mistake, how to fix it, and how to practice it so it sticks.

First, watch our 15-second challenge. Can you spot the mistake?

What the chain rule says

When one function is inside another, you take the derivative of the outside AND multiply by the derivative of the inside. In short: outside first, then multiply by the inside's derivative.

The mistake almost everyone makes

Problem: find the derivative of (3x² + 1)⁵.

Wrong: 5(3x² + 1)⁴

The student used the power rule on the outside and stopped. The inside, 3x² + 1, was never differentiated.

Right: 5(3x² + 1)⁴ · 6x = 30x(3x² + 1)⁴

The 6x is the derivative of the inside. Forget it, and the whole answer is wrong, even though the student 'knew' the chain rule.

3 more examples to practice

  1. d/dx of sin(4x) = cos(4x) · 4 = 4cos(4x)

  2. d/dx of e^(x²) = e^(x²) · 2x = 2x·e^(x²)

  3. d/dx of √(5x − 2) = 1 / (2√(5x − 2)) · 5 = 5 / (2√(5x − 2))

Notice the pattern: every answer has an extra factor at the end. That factor is the derivative of the inside. If your answer does not have it, stop and check.

A simple habit that saves points

  • Circle the inside function before you start.

  • Write its derivative in the margin first.

  • Do the outside derivative, then multiply by the number in the margin.

  • On the AP free-response, show the inside derivative as its own step. Graders give credit for clear work.
